It is interesting that Henry imprisoned Richard the Lion-Hearted (1189-1199) from 1192 to 1194, haN-ing bought him for a price from Diike Leopold of Austria. Henr\ held him until the Eni:lish paid his ransom, and Richard accepted vassal status. See also Germany; holy roman empire.

HENRY VII, KING OF GERMANY (c. 1275-1313) Count of LuxemK^urg (as Henrv 1\'), Gemian king from 1308 to 1313 and emperor from 1312. The successor to his father, Henr\- 111. as count in 1288, he was elected king following the murder of Albert 1 in 1308. His greatest political achievement was the acquisition of Bohemia, by the marriage of the Bohemian princess, Elizabeth, to his son, John of Luxembourg. John was crowned king of Bohemia in 1310. The follo\ving vear Henr\ vainlv attempted to restore imperial dominion over the region and to end the strife between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. His efforts came to naught, and in May 1312 he entered Rome, where he was crciwned emperor, despite the oppositiem of Robert, king of Naples. Henr\- then set out to subdue Tuscanv but failed to capture Florence and died of fever at Buonconvento. His death disappointed the Ghibellines and Dante, whc> had hoped to return to Florence. HENRY JASOMIRGOT (d. 1177) First duke of Austria from 115o. responsible for the aggrandizement of the House of Kahenberg. The half brother of the German king Conrad III (1093-1152). Henr\- was given the margravate of -Austria in 1140. following the death of his brother, Leopold 1\'. Tha^ugh his marriage, in 1142, to Gertrude, widow of Henrv the Proud, he laid claim as well to the duchv of Bavaria. A crisis occurred, however, after Gertrude's death in 1143. for Henr\' the Proud's son, Henr\' the Lion, demanded Bavaria. Frederick 1 Barbarossa, the new German king, as of 1152, granted Henr\- the Lion's request. Henr\" jasomirgot protested in 115o recei\ ing the title duke of Austria as a result.

HENRY OF BLOIS (d. 1171) Bishop of Winchester, papal legate and a participant in the contest for the English throne follo\nng the death of King Henr)- I in 1135. .A grandson of V\'illiam the Conqueau (10t>6-1087) and the brother of King Stephen of Blois (1135-1154), he became influential in ecclesiastical and political circles and crowned Stephen in 1135. .Attempting to gain the See of Canterbur\\ he was opposed bv Bernard of Clair\ aux and was made a papal legate instead. He deserted Stephen's cause in 1141. joining Matilda, but then returned to his brother, swearing loyalt)' at the Council in London in 1141. During the reign of Henr)- II (1154-1189) he supp>orted the king against Thomas a Becket. Noted for his interest in buildings, he established the monaster\- of Saint Cross at Winchester and was known for the construction of the castles of Wolvesev and Famham. See also engu.\nd.
